Returning Staff & Studio OLM’s Creative Continuity
The powerhouse creative team behind the first season is reuniting to maintain the signature blend of visceral body horror, psychological dread, and tactical battle mechanics.
Director: Hiroshi Ikehata (Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You, FLCL Progressive*) returns to helm the project, ensuring the series balances its dark comedic undercurrents with genuine, pulse-pounding terror.
Series Composition: Shigeru Murakoshi (Zombie Land Saga, Apocalypse Hotel, Snowball Earth*) continues to supervise scriptwriting and narrative pacing, translating the manga’s dense tactical maneuvers and multi-layered spirit battles cleanly to the screen.
- Character Design: Yuri Ichinose, who previously served as co-character designer and chief animation director in Season 1, steps into the lead character designer role, refining the uncanny character aesthetics and harrowing spectral monster designs.
Animation Studio: Studio OLM (Pokémon, Summer Time Rendering, Komi Can't Communicate*) is spearheading the animation production once again, bringing its robust experience in visual effects and dynamic action sequences.
Core Voice Cast Reprising Their Roles
The series’ central quartet will reprise their respective roles, bringing familiar emotional weight, comedic timing, and chilling psychological nuances back to the screen:
- Yu Shinohara as Yayoi Hozuki — The skull-pupiled, genius child occultist driven by an unyielding mission to rescue her mother’s soul from an ominous supreme deity.
- Nobunaga Shimazaki as Keitaro Gentoga — The cursed university freshman with an innate spiritual medium constitution whose right hand serves as a literal beacon for wandering phantoms.
- Kana Hanazawa as Eiko Hozuki — Keitaro’s childhood companion whose doting exterior conceals a dangerously obsessive, yandere-level fascination with both Keitaro and lethal paranormal phenomena.
- Rina Kawaguchi as Ai Kamiyo — The ill-fated pop idol cursed by a malevolent god of disaster, whose fate is inextricably bound to Yayoi’s overarching revenge crusade.
Strategic Horror Mechanics: Beyond Typical Ghost Stories
Unlike traditional supernatural anime that rely exclusively on jump scares, Dark Gathering carved out a dedicated following due to its unique tactical foundation—often described by fans as a grim, R-rated hybridization of strategic tactical battlers and pure psychological J-Horror.
```
[Keitaro: Spiritual Beacon] ──> Attracts Malicious Spirits
│
[Yayoi: Occult Strategist] ──> Captures & Tortures Phantoms (Graduation System)
│
[Eiko: Hardware & Intel] ──> Surveillance, Tech Tracking & Cursed Relics
```
The system relies on concrete supernatural rules:
1. Katashiro (Substitute Effigies): Diverting fatal curses away from human hosts into prepared substitute vessels.
2. Graduated Spirits (Sotsugyou-sei): Subjugated spirits subjected to brutal mutual cannibalism (Kodoku) inside Yayoi’s plushie collection, evolving into lethal living weapons capable of deploying localized domain curses.
3. The Kyoto Jinkai Gauntlet: Deploying captured high-threat spirits into real-world cursed ley lines across Japan to establish tactical kill zones against god-tier entities.
Retrospective & The Road to the Kyoto Arc
The first season of Dark Gathering aired across two consecutive cours for 25 episodes from July 2023 to December 2023, adapting the early urban exploration arcs, the terrifying encounter at the Old F Tunnel, the birth of the Asura spirit, and the tactical preparation for the Kyoto campaign.

Season 2 is poised to tackle the monumental Kyoto Haunted Spots Arc, where Yayoi, Keitaro, and Eiko must simultaneously conquer several Rank-S and Class-Graduated horror locations to prepare for the inevitable confrontation against the terrifying deity Taisui Xingjun.
Manga Serialization & Global Overview
Written and illustrated by Kenichi Kondo, the original manga launched in Shueisha’s monthly Jump Square magazine on March 4, 2019. Celebrated for its uncompromisingly graphic creature designs, deep occult research rooted in authentic Japanese folklore, and clever tactical combat, the series reached 20 tankobon volumes in Japan by July 2026.
VIZ Media oversees the official English publication, summarizing the core premise:
Keitaro is ready to stop living as a shut-in. He’s starting university. He’s reconnecting with his childhood friend. He’s taking a tutoring job. And he’s not messing around with ghosts anymore. At least that’s what he thinks, until he finds out the elementary schooler he’s tutoring is an occult-obsessed genius who’s hunting down dangerous spirits and won’t stop until she’s found the one that took her mom!
With production advancing steadily under Studio OLM, fans can prepare for a truly harrowing return when Dark Gathering Season 2 brings its unique blend of strategic terror back to screens in 2027.
